Managing Emotions Through Nervous System Regulation
According to Linda Thai, LMSW, trauma can affect our social-emotional skills, such as our ability to identify, express, and manage emotions. In order for trauma healing to occur, people need to feel a sense of safety, and learning to regulate the nervous system through various methods can help us deal with anxiety, overthinking, and emotional flooding. Along with a sense of safety, it is equally important to establish equity regarding access to resources in order to promote social-emotional competencies. Healing from trauma is political because politics dictate who has access to resources that can help.
In this session, you’ll learn:
- Stressful and traumatic experiences can overwhelm the nervous system and have a lasting impact on the psyche and body
- Cultivating a sense of safety is key to creating an environment where people feel supported and able to start healing from trauma
- SEL, trauma-informed work, and equity all overlap
